In most counties in America a permit is needed to install an air conditioner . A contractor has to pull the permit otherwise the homeowner can get a fine for not doing so , one of the most advantages of having a permit is that your home value goes up after its registered so when you are selling the home you can add the cost of the air conditioner plus a mark up to get more money for your house.

Unlicensed contractors can’t pull permits for home HVACR work unless it’s their own home.
